Review

Le Moulin used to be a famous spot in France where new kinds of art flourished. ‘Moulin de la Galette’, which is famous thanks to Renoir’s painting, was a place where its dancehall was filled up with culture on the front line. Influenced by the name, Taiwan’s earliest modern artists’ group, Le Moulin Poetry Group was established in the 1930s. The Group created a new culture by using surreal, uncompromising, and sophisticated languages. The documentary Le Moulin follows the traces of the group and their records to examine the significant movement of the modernism in the 1930s in Asia. It is the modernism influenced by that of Europe, but it’s also a different kind of modernism because it was re-interpreted in local language. This kind of movement can be found in the countries all around Asia, and its history is important because it examines the origin of the rapidly-changing culture of today’s society. While precedent documentaries in Asia were about the testimonies and records of the wounded history, Le Moulin records the history of culture while keeping a fair distance and traces down the origins of current culture. When we put ourselves back to those days when people were experiencing a cultural shock to something that we are accustomed to in these days, we will be able to realize the essential aspects of the culture.
