Review

Miguel and Johnny are friends and lovers. They make money by selling blood and spend time by skateboarding around the streets of Mexico City. When Miguel’s plan to make money falls through due to a gang’s betrayal, the bond between the two starts to fall apart. Miguel’s mother expels her troublesome son out of the country. Miguel and Johnny who don’t follow the rules of the world live the lives on the edge. Miguel who is from a well-off family leaves his stable life behind and lives like a tramp. Johnny is dating Miguel while keeping a close relationship with his girlfriend. There isn’t a clear reason why the two live the lives of outsiders, but their identity of never settling down gives a hint. I Promise You Anarchy is different from other coming-of-age movies because it’s a creative movie about teenager’s anarchistic spirit of resistance that refuses to be institutionalized. The wandering minds of the youngsters are implied through drifting camera moves, and discontinuous editing and sound design. (JANG Byungwon)
