Review

As Tony recovers with a broken leg from a skiing accident, she sees Georgio in a club one night. They instantly fall madly in love. Tony marries Georgio, a rich restauranteur, and she gets pregnant, but her brother Solal is still suspicious of him. Mon Roi’s main concept is to create a conflict of two emotions that split at extremes. To allow this, Maiwenn Le Besco, actress and director, uses flashbacks of past and present. Just like Derek Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine, the story is narrated through random time leaps through time and space, generating huge fluctuations like Tony and Georgio’s inconsistent relationship. This film catches the audience’s eyes with narrative design, extremely natural dialogue and the ensemble acting of Vincent Cassel and Emmanuelle Bercot. With her experience in acting, Maiwenn’s sensitive control over acting shines in some of the scenes. It was the most controversial film of 2015 Cannes Film Festival’s competitive section.
