Review

Schneider is a contract killer who loves in artificial housing in a swamp are that is remote controlled. He gets an order to take out a young writer before the night is over. In conflict over his birthday, Schneider accepts the suspicious job. But then Francis comes to visit and the hit doesn’t go according to plan. Alex Van Warmerdam wrote, directed, and acted in this film that demonstrates how the director strives for perfect control. The idea is quite simple. A veteran killer is faced with obstacles that hinder him from doing his job. This reads like a Hollywood script so far but the butterfly effect of the trivial obstacle becomes tremendous and separates this film from conventional genre films. Van Warmerdam’s makes Schneider vs. Bax an irrational play with narrative that doesn’t give form to the theme of life and death. (JANG Byungwon)
