One Floor Below is the story of truth sealed by the fragility and selfishness of mankind. One day, Patrascu hears his downstairs neighbor Laura fighting with her boyfriend. The next day, she turns up dead and Patrascu is convinced that her boyfriend who also lives in the building is the murderer. When the police coming knocking at his door, however, he says nothing. This thriller with its slow tempo that reminds us of Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window talks about the complex and twisted human nature. Why doesn’t Patrascu tell the truth that he knows? Is he trying to protect the murderer or himself? Radu Muntean (Tuesday, after Christmas) is a Romanian New Wave director who poses this ethical question and asks that the audience find their own answer. The theme of ‘social responsibility’ evokes the history and distinct characteristics of Romania in this fable. (JANG Byungwon)
