Omar lives in the slums with a nagging mother and a prostitute sister. He steals a gold necklace from Selma, a neighboring girl, who goes from being simply a victim to him to a source of comfort in his harsh life. He leads a hopeless life of stealing and dreams of her when he gets high. Merzak Allouache gained fame with a fable about the reality of Algeria. In cinema verite style, the drama simply observes how Omar wanders through a world of evil. His emotions are not directly expressed and only his barren life is portrayed. His guant cheeks, protruding teeth and wild animal-like eyes are suggestive of ‘Mouchette’ or ‘Rosetta’. Omar shining a flashlight on a cemetary angel illustrates the tragedy of a world out of reach of God’s grace. (JANG Byungwon)
