Review

A young doctor Fabian decides to leave Berlin after seeing a dying patient who resembles him like a doppelganger. He heads to Portugal, where his ex-girlfriend Doro lives. The name of the film, Fado, refers to the traditional Portuguese music. The word is derived from a Latin word, fatum, which means fate. On the same note, the film views the world in the eyes of fate and destiny. The relationship between Fabian and Doro repeats its past like a fate. Fabian and Doro fall in love again. After a short moment, however, Fabian starts to look Doro’s male friends with suspicion that he even secretly follows her around. After realizing Fabian’s obsession for her, just like the past, Doro decides to break up with him. The repetitive, obsessive and destructive love story is similar to the melodies of Fado music. While taking care of patients in desperate situation as a doctor in an ambulance, Fabian ponders about fate in life. (LEE Sang-yong)
