Mixing reality and comedy, the film gives a brilliant portrayal of the ironies of life.

Nogami was burdened with a debt his late father has left. He comes up with the decision of selling his grandfather’s property to pay it off. The apartment in the property seems just an old building to him, but his grandfather would not say yes to the demolition of the apartment. He happens to start living in the apartment with two other young people. They felt lost in life, but start finding their own ways when they start knowing more about the people with life experience surrounding them.

Poet, philosopher and director Andrei Tarkovsky made this autobiographical film before his exile from USSR. Interestingly the film includes a poem written by his father Arsenjy Tarkovsky. Through dissolving scene changes, surrealistic mis-en-scene and brilliant slow motion usage, the film crosses mysterious boundaries. The technical skill involved in the shooting of the film creates an impression that the viewer is watching a moving painting.

After the shorts If You Were Me(2003) and If You Were Me: Anima Vision(2005), Fly Penguin is the very first feature film on human rights produced and sponsored by National Human Rights Commission of Korea.

Son of American experimental movie maker, Ken Jacobs, Azazel makes his own parents appear in a film that comically draws on various aspects of American society.

It’s nighttime in Prague, 1968. Soviet troops are occupying the city. So, while the Soviets are concocting false reports of heartfelt receptions without military resistance for propaganda purposes, the director sets off on a risky trip across the closed Czech-Austrian border to Vienna.

American peace activist Rachel Corrie’s death in the Gaza Strip in March 2003 hardly caused a media stir at the time but Paris based documentary filmmaker, Simone Bitton, presents a full investigation in Rachel. The film focuses on the clear, if sometimes, foolish risks that well-intentioned Western human rights activists undertake in Mideast conflicts.

Z32 is the classification number of a testimony kept by ‘Breaking the Silence,’ an organization that uncovers unethical atrocities committed by the Israeli army. The director gives a camera to one of the men who participated in the plan and makes him film himself. By placing their faces side by side, the director is able to show understanding slowly dawning on their faces, and he raises the issue of identities wounded in war.

The plot of The Origin of Water was formed when the director taking a walk by Namhan River in his hometown Chungg-ju, saw the grave of an innocent college student killed during ‘6.3 Sate’ (The state of martial law in Korea, June 1967).

Bandhobi meaning Great Friend in Bengali, deeply tells about the marginalized class, immigrant laborers in Korea. Director delivers the hopeful story of two different people as in his previous film Host & Guest(2005) capturing the warmness towards the socially alienated.

The result La Rabbia failed at the box office. Forty-five years later, since its release constructed from newsreel footage accompanied by poetic and political commentary, reveals his radical view of history.

In the winter of 1981, Nowak, an electrical engineer arrives at London with three workers to renovate his boss’s house. During their stay in London however, a military upheaval occurs in Poland, and to make matters worse, they run out of money. The film, which shows the reality of Poland and sorrows of laborers in that period, is also a black comedy that does not fail to show critical perspective and pathos.

This is the third feature film of Jose Luis Torres Leiva, who received the Jury Award at JIFF in 2008.

Olivier Assayas, for whom directing a film means creating choreography for camera and actors, was seduced by the world of Angelin Preljocaj and the challenge presented by the choreographer.

Veer Zaara, which has won JIFF Audience Award at JIFF 2006, is a story of a star-crossed love after between the Indian Air Force officer Veer and Pakistani woman Zaara. This 3-hour film directed by Yash Chopra, one of the three major directors in India, never let you down as well as hard to believe that the director is 72 years old. This is a typical Bollywood masala movie starring Shahrukh Khan, one of the three Khan of Indian cinema.

Sang-gyu decides to make the first soul band in Korea with his band, The Devils, and succeeds in getting booked in Seoul. Their music inspires a Go Go Dance fever and they enjoy great popularity, but due to governmental control, the band is under the threat of being disbanded. Nirvana, Korea’s first Go Go Club, and The Devils who aroused the Go Go fad are the models for this work. Jo Seung-woo’s powerful voice and Shin Minah’s incredible dance are fully captured.

SHUT UP & SING

The Dixie Chicks are at the top of their game as one of the most successful bands of all time. However, one of the Chicks vents off the cuff at a concert about being ashamed of US President George W. Bush. This film covers the band’s efforts to ride out the turmoil that would leave their careers under a cloud, but eventually gave them an opportunity to grow into great artists who bow to no one.

SUNNY

A human drama about Sunny who became a singer to find her husband fighting in Vietnam War, this film is the last installment in director’s music movie trilogy, following Radio Star and Happy Life. The Korean title He Is Far Away is taken from the hit song on Chuja Kim’s 1969 debut album. The film stars Sooah, Jung Jin-young and Jung Kyung-ho, among others, and Um Tae-woong is a cameo as Sunny’s husband. The film vividly revives Vietnam in the 60’s with its three-month- long on-location filming.

This movie, made by two Lebanese directors, straddles the line between documentary and fiction. The movie begins with an accident that prevents them from leaving Paris, coinciding with a war occurring in Lebanon. The two directors ask questions of themselves about the war that takes away their hopes and leaves only brutal scars. Thinking about what to write and what kind of image to show, they present a thoughtful account of what to do in times of hopelessness.

Juliette Binoche and 114 of Iran’s best known actresses are watching a play. However, we can only listen and watch the faces of the actresses while the stage remains hidden. This movie is not a documentary. It is a puzzle only the audience can solve.

Each part reveals the directors’ individuality: Leos Carax captures a peculiar one-manshow with famous actor Denis Lavant; Michel Gondry expresses his special novelty and playfulness; and Bong Joon-ho portrays the chemical interaction between two actors.

BEAUTY’S EXOTIC DANCE: TORTURE!

This is the final episode in director’s ambitious Showa Era trilogy, preceded by Abe Sada: A Docu-Drama (1975) and Walker In The Attic (1976). Ito has two wives and simultaneously entertains a street whore named Tae. Tae is Ito’s favorite and, as such, receives the brunt of his sadistic love.

The first commercial film of Hong Ki-seon, who produced Bluebird(1986) and Oh! Dreamland(1989), this film metaphorically portrays the stifling reality of Korean society through a young man detained on a slave ship and the various classes of people who step onto it. Screened at the Nantes Film Festival in 1992 and awarded the Jury Award at the San Remo Film Festival in 1993.

SCHOOL DAYS WITH A PIG

A rookie primary school teacher suggests his students that they raise a pig, as a way to teach “the real connection between life and food.” He further proposes to eat the pig P-chan, and the class takes care of it in rotation. After a year, P-chan have turned into a 200kg bulk. The deadline of the project, their graduation, is mercilessly approaching. They have to decide whether to eat P-chan following the initial promise with the teacher.

Tiexiqu is a industrial district built during the Japanese occupation in Shenyang. From the postwar period to the 1980s, the thriving factories employed more than a million workers, but like other state-run industries they began their collapse in the early 1990s. During 2 years of production time, director
meticulously filmed the lives of the last factory workers, a class of people once promised glory during the Chinese revolution. Screened in JIFF 2002.

7915KM is a course in the 2007 Dakar Rally, also known as the ‘Death Rally.’ However, the director does not focus on Europeans heading to Africa for the Death Rally, but rather listens to the diverse voices of Africans he meets on the road. The Africans talk repeatedly about the prejudice they experience, political relations with Europe, and economic issues, and they undertake to hold their own rally towards Europe.

California Company Town is a beautiful 16mm film presenting the past and present of California boom towns created and abandoned by enterprise. Through archive footage of the past and present of fourteen boom towns, the director discloses the time and history inherent within the scenery. While avoiding the strict formalism of fellow CalArts professor James Benning, the director borrows Benning’s poetic gaze.

Bricks are manufacured in Africa, India and Europe and used to erect clinics, children’s homes, schools and residential buildings. Harun Farocki observed the different steps of the manufacturing process. The film’s title communicates a decisive aspect: Farocki merely offers material to the viewer, who has to draw the actual comparisons between traditional, early industrial, and fully industrialized societies himself.

THE MEMORIES OF ANGELS

The Memories of Angels is a beautiful mosaic made up of 120 stockshots and clips of Montreal provided by the National Film Board of Canada. The film, which recalls Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire, suspends the viewer on angel’s wings that allow him to see every inch of Montreal. Poetry, essay, music, and fiction mix together, guiding the viewer into a dream-like period. The debut work of a leading director of Canadian video art, this film is a serenade to the city of Montreal.

THE ONE MAN VILLAGE

As the only remaining inhabitant of Ain El Hazaroun, a small village outside Beirut, Semaan stubbornly remains, while other villagers, who fled the besieged village during the 15-year civil war, have failed to return. Le Genou d’artemide, the first work Straub completed alone after Huillet’s death in October of 2006, resumes their interest in the poetry of Cesare Pavese. A sequel of sorts to 2005’s Quei Loro Incontri, this new work is an adaptation of Pavese’s The Wild Beast, which is the sixth conversation in the collection Dialogues with Leuco. Reuniting actors from the Teato comunale de Buti and told in typical Strubian style, the film is a heart-rending tale of the insoluble gap between mortals of gods.
