Seminar - Beyond Platform

This year, JPM is going to host a seminar entitled “Beyond Platform” for filmmakers, who are searching for new possibilities. The seminar will seek survival strategies and new methods of developing and distributing Independent/art-house films in the era of new platform with filmmakers and distributors. Lastly, a business session about the international sales of Jeonju IFF will be held.

Moderator MOON Sung (Jeonju IFF Programmer)
Worked for numerous international film festivals including Jeonju IFF, Busan IFF, JPM, Docs Port Incheon. She also worked for KT&G Sangsang Madang as an expert in documentary films. From 2013, she has been an expat for Korean Film Council, specializing in central South American films. In 2019, she was nominated to serve as a programmer for Jeonju IFF.

Beyond Platform 1

: How to DEVELOP (11:00 – 11:50) 

We follow the footage of the director, YOON Seongho, who is constantly working across various platforms. He will talk about platforms other than the conventional movie sites. We hope to think again about the meaning of development using new platforms, in particular, from the creators’ perspectives.

Directed Milky Way Liberation Front (2017), which was nominated as the independent film of 2017. Best known for his unique filmmaking style, he also made films including Read My Lips(2010), which is regarded as one of the first Korean web dramas, A little hugry Woman (2013), Remarkable Woman (2014), Lily Forever (2015), and Top Management (2018), among others. He is leading a group of sitcom makers who strive to create alternative contents.
SONG Jae-young(Producer) Corner Stone Pictures
Graduated in mass communication of Sogang University obtained MFA from Korea National University of Arts. He was in charge of filmmaking and production of movies at Fineworks and Moon watcher as a producer. He currently works as a representative director of Corner Stone Pictures.

Beyond Platform 2

: How to DELIVER (13:00 - 13:50)

We will learn about film distribution strategies from the experiences of M-LINE Distribution. The company has been in charge of international sales of a majority of independent and artistic films produced in Korea. From this we hope to provide information regarding film distribution for independent and artistic film directors. In turn, from the perspectives of distributors, one can also learn about the strategies in this era of new platforms.

Joined at Mline Distribution and worked on overseas sales and film festival since 2010. She has been in charge of commercial films and independent films including The Man from Nowhere (2010), Gyeonju (2013), THE OUTLAWS (2017), The First Lap (2017), Microhabitat (2018), Winter’s Night (2018), and Little Forest (2018).

: How to CO-WORK "Shellac" Case Study (14:00 - 14:50)

We will look at cases of successful collaboration between SHELLAC, an international film distribution company based in France, and director Damien Manivel. From this case, creators will have an opportunity to think again about development and distribution strategies.

Damien MANIVEL Director
Born in France. A Young Poet (2014), his first feature film, awarded Special Mention at Locarno FF. His second feature film, The Park (2016), received the Best Picture Prize at Jeonju IFF in 2017.
Martin BertierProducer
Production manager for renown directors such as Wang Bing, Julie Bertuccelli, Avi Mograbi, Emmanuel Finkiel, Gianfranco Rosi. In 2015 he founds his own company 5A7 Films to produce shorts, features and documentaries. His first production Totems by Sarah Arnold won the Pardino d’Oro in Locarno. In 2015, he meets Damien Manivel and joins MLD Films to produce and manage the production.
Thomas ORDONNEAU (Shellac)
Started in movie industry in working on film shootings and then in movie theatres. In 2003 he founded SHELLAC and then SHELLAC Sud in 2006 to complement a production, distribution and cinematographic edition tool to develop new talents and to support a particular cinematographic form. In 2018, this tool has been completed by the opening of one theatre, La Baleine, in Marseille, south of France. He has produced and/or distributed Happy Times will Come Soon (2016), The Other Side (2015), A Young Poet (2014) and ISADORA’S CHILDREN (2019) among others. He is actually co-producing the new films, Technoboss.
