Expanded Plus is a non-theatrical installation program launched to celebrate the 20th Jeonju International Film Festival. This can be regarded as a tributary to the original Expanded Cinema, but it is perceived as an alternative program to present the new beginning of Jeonju IFF from the 20th edition and beyond. This year’s theme is “UTOPIAN PHANTOM.” This title, which appears to be a combination of nonexistent or unrelated words, penetrates the work of artists that molded the properties of cinema “hallucination” into language of “ghost.” Meanwhile, Expanded Plus is a long-standing wish of Jeonju IFF. Contrary to the tendency of conventional films, this film festival aims to go beyond the territories of modern cinema to widen and to experiment how far we can go in terms of content and form. This year, a total of 14 pieces of installations by 12 artists (including co-artists) will be presented. Masters that testifies at the forefront of the current trend of moving images including James Benning, Kevin Jerome Everson, Ben Rivers, Ju Anqi and Jodie Mack, Helena Wittman/ Nika Son, Malena Szlam, Peter Bo Rappmund/Adam R. Levine, Natalia Marin, Jang Woo-jin exhibit their works in various ways. Most of the works will not only be presented in theaters, but also exhibited inside the gallery in the form of either projections or installations. There are also works presenting different versions between the theater screening and the installation.
