Metallic Shadow in the Dream
The two video installations by Lois PATIÑO are set in the Sea of Cortez, in Baja California of Mexico. In this deepest stratum of the sea more than 6,000 meters below the surface, there live the world’s smallest whales where the absence of light is total, the pressure is really high, and the temperature is close to 0℃. In this cold and silent abyss like Greek God of death, Hades lives, the submerged body finds the exact balance where it neither emerges towards the surface, nor sinks towards the bottom, but remains suspended in total synchrony with the movement of the body of water. It is a state of suspension controlled from slow breathings and less oxygen, the borders of the body are feeling diluted. PATIÑO invites audiences to an intimate experience of deep introspection with this minimal installation. Sea Body describes a part of sea as a luminescent stone. It shows one of the most unique animals of the Sea of Cortez, the whale shark and the contemplation of the underwater universe with the reactions of light. Metallic shadow in the dream portrays the flowing consciousness with fusion between night, sea, and dream. It stretch the director’s cinematic world to installation, who has presented sensorial aspects with image language rather than traditional narrative ways. [Sung MOON]
