Review

Raul RUIZ, one of the most creative directors in Chilean film history, made more than 120 films and TV series and deceased in 2011. His films are not only alive in Cinephile’s mind, but seem to continue to increase even after his death, as if they were based on conspiracy theories and surreal imagination. Following the 2017 La Telenovela Errante and this year’s THE TANGO OF THE WIDOWER and its distorting mirror unveiled at Berlin Forum, Realismo Socialista will be released in 2021. Borrowing its title and spirit of Pablo NERUDA’s poem, the film THE TANGO OF THE WIDOWER and its distorting mirror depicts a man suffering from the ghost of his wife who committed suicide. It was his first feature but remained unfinished. Finally, RUIZ’s wife Valeria SARMIENTO, his editor and work partner, completed it. The film includes the formal experiments such as fantasy, fiction and time-travel to convey both delightfulness and unfamiliarity to the audience. In his first feature film, which has never been released before, we can see the birth of a true filmmaker who not only has his talent but also has already created his own film world. [sung MOON]
