At 5:57 p.m. on June 29, 1995, a high-end luxury department store in the middle of Gangnam collapsed. With 502 people dead and 937 injured, this was the largest disaster in South Korea’s history since the Korean War. The collapse of the Sampoong Department Store became a national trauma that was covered for nearly a month on television. The history of the department store, which began with the construction boom in the 1960s, is representative of Korea’s development during those times. Sampoong had jumped on the wagon of growth and rushed through time. Yet the tragedy of the “collapse” that was waiting for it at the end was perhaps a regret of the time that our society gave birth to.
