Review

I am given a few months to live. My friend who is a doctor asks me, “What will you tell the kids?” All I can think of was a lame comment. But then something comes across my mind. “Keep walking. There are more things to learn in the world anyway.” The End of the Universe follows the path of a terminally ill woman heading home. Practicing what she preaches, the protagonist walks back home. The people she encounters on the street suggests various ideas on life. Simple composition yet there are enough messages between the lines. The question “What is death?” soon leads to “What is life?” In the end, the film strikes up a conversation by presenting various aspects of “How to live now.” The warm, simple images in pastel tones go hand in hand with the trivial events and frivolous conversations that occur on the way home and bring a hearty laugh. The story that can be heavy or abstract extends to an everyday sympathy thanks to the refined humor here and there. The balance between drawing, storytelling, message, and the silliest humor is not excessive nor insufficient but outstanding. [SONG Kyung-won]
