Review

Dear.Picaresque is a film with complex ideas. As the director plans to move, she looks back that her life in Seoul resembled her old room she used to live in. She suddenly realizes that the features of the room with “no space to form a square and no empty walls” being similar with her location in Seoul and “the house that is lacking something and the life that is never fulfilled” are ultimately connected with each other. The idea that the space of a house or room eventually touches the traces of life becomes on opportunity for the director to look back at the houses she has been living in. But the idea of the house is nothing more than that of a person living in it. Within these ideas, the director recalled her family who is gradually dismantling. In this chain of thoughts, the director finally approaches the separation of family members “like a line from a movie or song lyrics” or “like drama.” In the context of a private documentary, Dear.Picaresque shows that records of extremely personal life can form a great consensus with the outside world. The director’s ideas, engraved on an old videotape, allow anyone who lives in this society to empathize and understand a family’s story can touch all our lives. In the second half of the film, the director does not meet with her father in person and only interacts through her phone or a disposable camera. The depressing feeling of farewell that begins here is difficult to shake off for quite a while even after the film ends. [MOON Seok]
