Filmed in the Andean Mountains, the traditional lands of the Northern Chile and Northwest Argentina. Altiplano takes place within ancestral salt flats, volcanic deserts and colored lakes. Fusing earth with sky, day with night, heartbeat with mountains and mineral with iridescent cloud, the film reveals a landscape in which a blue sun threatens to eclipse a blood moon.
Chile-born, Montreal-based filmmaker Malena Szlam transformed the elements of the Altiplano plateau ─ volcanic desserts, salt flats, and colored lakes and the surface of the land ─ into the vibrating audio-visual images. The blue-red landscape coupled with a soundscape generated from infrasound recordings of volcanoes, geysers, Chilean blue whales, and with the use of in-camera editing, create evocative visual rhythms. Szlam has actively joined us from the space and sound design to the actual installation.
