Two young men, Seung-woo and Jae-hyun, serve as ‘host’, a male escort for a discreet private women´s club in a major district of Seoul. In the backdrop of Seoul´s fast-changing modern lifestyle, these two men try to live the upbeat life of the affluent crowd by raking in money at the club even though their personal lives become ruined day by day.
When the film starts, the camera explores a host bar from the outside to the inside in a long take, which reminds us of Goodfellas (1991) or Boogie Nights (1999). It shows the director’s ambition to reveal the naked truth of Korean capitalism. Jae-hyun is the leader of the group who is full of bluff and tall tales even in debt. Seung-woo derives benefits from enticing rich women to climb the ladder of success. The film depicts the desire and frustration of two men living like walking on the edge of a knife. It also criticizes the vain endeavor of show-off life. [KIM Youngjin]
