Review

The Portuguese Woman is an adaptation of Austrian writer Robert Musil’s 1924 classic about a suffering woman. A nameless woman lives in a desolate castle while her husband is at war. The woman suffers from loneliness for many years as she is detained in a secluded place. She avoids any visitors because of her husband’s debt and spends all her time in creating work of art with the young. Filled with cinematic richness, this film shows that classics could be reborn into a contemporary historical drama. [JANG Byungwon]
