Thirty-five years ago, I witnessed the kidnapping of a man I know. He has disappeared since. Ten years ago, I caught a glimpse of his face while walking in the street, but I wasn’t sure it was him. Parts of his face were torn off, but his features had remained unchanged since the incident. Yet something was different, as if he wasn’t the same man.
Ghassan Halwani’s experimental essay film Erased, Ascent of the Invisible is the product of his research into the traces of thousands of people vanished during the Lebanese Civil War. Between 1975 and 1990, the history that was buried after the war becomes the topic of the conversation to Halwani himself, an animator, artist and director. He collects bibliographic data and keepsakes on the missing people, recalls memories and carefully analyzes the mechanism of disappearance. [JANG Byungwon]
