The film weaves the footage of filmed and broadcasted sources of Chinese live-streaming anchors, who struggle with real-life face-to-face social interaction because of their identity, disability and social-economic status. This cinematic collage explores how individuals satisfy their cravings for human connection through virtual togetherness.
Present.Perfect. shows how abandoned people communicate through YouTube videos. Those who appear in the film are all YouTubers who want to gain influence. A street dancer with no place to settle, a badly burned man who survived from a terrible fire, a disabled girl expressing gratitude for her "likes," a female factory worker who turned their labor space into a place of entertainment. Completely different from her previous film Another Year (2016), Zhu Shengze maps the present China by using "live streaming." [JANG Byungwon]
