"Hello. I´m Itami Jun. I apologize for my poor Korean." Itami Jun (Yoo Dongryong), a Korean architect who was born in Japan. This film follows his life through heartwarming architectures for people that he had tried for all his life. The architecture of time that exists for the people, space and the story of an architect who walked his own way between Korea and Japan, Shimizu and Jeju.
The Sea of Itami Jun recounts the life of Jun, a diaspora architect born and raised in Japan but who always had the Korean identity, through the recollections of people around him and the architecture he built. Itami Jun had a hard time to work as an architect while living in Japan as a foreigner without naturalization, but he was finally recognized as a successful architect at the end of his life. Until then, he searched for time and space by frequenting Korea and Japan. Building a structure in a space is annotating on the history of the space, connecting the history and re-establishing the tradition of the space. In a word, it is a reminder of the time traces of people who lived, live and will live in the space. This film is an architect’s biography and an outstanding visual comment that touches us by portraying his ideals of architecture. [KIM Youngjin]
