Overview

The White Building, an iconic structure home to 493 families in Phnom Penh, faces demolition. In the building´s final days, Kavich Neang follows three families, including his own, as they pack belongings, share memories and anxieties, and eventually move out before the building´s total destruction.

Review

The White Building in Phnom Penh, Cambodia is symbolic. The building centered in the city was the experiment of the social state, since it was built and supplied on low cost. Although it became an old and dangerous structure, it has been a nest to the merchants, art galleries and the poor. Last Night I Saw You Smiling is a documentary about the process of demolishing the building. Director Kavich Neang captures memories of the past and the anxiety of the future revolving around his family. He also captures the memories of the building ― those moving out at last minute, those growing old there and the final moments of the building collapsing. The new buildings in the city show contrast with the White Building. Time replaces these buildings, but they cannot replace the memories. The film itself is a record. [LEE Sang-yong]
