Review

Ensemble is the story of three men and women in a theater troupe in Jeonju. Some members just started a relationship, failed at a relationship or are looking for relationship, and their love plans occur in the same space but in different time lines. This aspect of life looks totally different seen from the other side, and their lives influence on each other. The director, staff and actors reach the similar goal at the end of having different purposes. In the climax of the film, the final outdoor performance after their many practices shows analogy between love and art. Love is not about two different people reaching one goal, but about embracing each other’s differences while maintaining their differences. Jung Hyungsuk re-confirms his talent for designing the story structure and drawing interesting themes from this film. [KIM Youngjin]

DIRECTOR
JUNG Hyungsuk

Jung Hyungsuk is a theater director, stage actor in several films and plays, and also film director. He debuted as a film director with The Night View of the Ocean in Yeosu (2016), and his second film The Land of Seonghye (2018) won the Grand Prize in Korean Competition at Jeonju International Film Festival 2018. He gazes at travelers’ relationship while journeying with optimism and good intentions in his debut work The Night View of the Ocean in Yeosu. In his second film The Land of Seonghye, the camera only follows everyday labor without embellishment, which informed us that his directing talent bloomed. He is a problematic director thinking of unexpected parole, even though he seemed to follow existing film grammar.
