Overview

The summer of 1990 in Chile. A small group of families live in an isolated community right below the Andes, building a new world away from the city. Sofia, Lucas and Clara struggle with their parents, first loves and fears, while they prepare a party for New Year’s Eve.

Review

This film is a story about a community and the growth of a girl. In 1990, several families formed a community in the Andes. Sofia, Lucas and Clara spend time in a group yet have their own summer plans. Why are they living here as a herd? Where can these isolated souls who bear curiosity toward the world go? Sofia starts to doubt as she hangs out with people outside the community. This is the process of growth and also the historical backdrop of the film. Sotomayor Castillo follows the girl as she gets mature, in the time when democracy begins to prosper in Chile. The vague fear and the desire for something new is reflected on the eyes and actions of the character. Too young to make decisions, but still we can feel possibilities slowly drawing near. DIRECTOR
Dominga SOTOMAYOR CASTILLO

The Chilean director Dominga Sotomayor Castillo gained attention as she won the Tiger Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam with her debut film Thursday Till Sunday (2012). The facets of family history in this film overlap with the story of the little brother and sister witnessing their parent’s breakup in the film Too Late to Die Young, which will be screened at this year’s festival. Her films Thursday till Sunday and Los Barcos (2015) were previously introduced at Jeonju IFF. With her works of female protagonists seeking a breakthrough from reality, family, and adversities, she verifies her position as a prominent female director in Latin America. Too Late to Die Young also portrays a female protagonist and her peers growing up in the 1990s Chile. While her tone is evident in the films, she keeps a distance and materializes refined images.
