Since a stranger appears, mysterious incidents turns the village upside down. Police has come to provisional conclusion by the collective poisoning with wild mushroom. But the rumors are spreading out of control.
The ''WAILING'' may seem like a complex mixture of religion, psychology, and horror. But it has a clear direction. As with Na Hong-jin’s debut film The Chaser(2008), the story features an outsider (Kunimura Jun) and seeks his true identity. Yet a series of complicated events make it difficult to guess at the essence. Or perhaps the director creates a chase only to wring and twist it to deconstruct various aspects of the village. Local policeman Jong-goo hears about a stranger from the mysterious woman who claims to have witnessed the crime. When his daughter Hyojin displays symptoms similar to other victims, he starts believing everything he sees. The arrival of another shaman, Il-gwang, further complicates people’s truths and lies. Na navigates bewteen simplicity and complexity to continue his cinematic imagination. [LEE Sang-yong]
