Review

As the title implies, The Commune is a story of people who create a commune. After inheriting a large mansion, Erik, an architecture professor, and his wife, a newscaster, plan to establish a commune where many people live together. The couple carries out interviews to pick the members of the community. Though the members do not know one another, the place is filled with joy at the beginning. It feels fulfilling for them to get to know one another while sharing foods and drinks. However, the conflict begins when Erik falls in love with a young student. His wife accepts the reality and rather focuses on the importance of keeping the community. Her decision, however, turns the commune into pieces. During a meeting, the daughter of the couple stands up and says that it is her mother who should be exiled from the Commune. In between the emotion of individuals and the spirit of the community, the film dramatically shows how everyone’s dream to be ideal is just too hard to realize. With the director’s own experience in the film, The Commune feels like his nostalgia for the past. The film has many interesting aspects to be examined. (LEE Sang-yong)
