In low-budget film scene, none would be remain as productive as Lee Sang-woo would be. With his previous works including Father Is A Dog and Mother Is A Whore he got two opposite reactions from the critics. He could be appreciated as the most unique artist who shows the extremes of human lives without making any adjustment, whereas he is still criticized by others being a mere sensationalist. After making an exception with Barbie, he seems to return to his own element with Exit, an adaptation of Kim Young-ha’s short story. Woo-hyun stays in a cheap motel room in Shinchon. He sometimes go mugging with his gang and spends most of his life on sex and violence. Whenever he gets laid, his girlfriends’ tattoo near her genital attracts him. He calls it an ‘exit’, as it is an arrow pointing straight to her vagina. Of course, we had enough of these obsessed-with-vagina stories. Still, the director’s rough manner depicting Woo-hyun’s life is full of dynamics, like the scales of fish freshly out of water. The foregrounding of sex and violence let us assume that the director has limited perspective on the world. Still, his rage towards the society is so intense and just. He must cling to his drastic manner for a while yet.
