Born 1962 in Tokyo, Japan. Studied literature at Waseda University and worked with TV Man Union, directing prize winning TV documentaries. In 1995, Maborosi(1995) won the Venice International Film Festival's Golden Osella Prize. His films, Distance(2001), Still Walking(2008) and Like Father, Like Son(2013) deal with social welfare, death and memory problem.
