Review

Director Bruce McDonald, who has been deeply involved in musical films and documentaries from his early stages, has clearly revealed his fandom without any adjustments in this film. For that reason, this movie based on the outdoor concert of the 21 member Canadian band ‘Broken Social Scene’ at Harbor Front Center may seem like a live concert mixed with a romantic comedy, like the name of the band in the movie. Bruno has deep feelings of love for Caroline who has to leave for France the next day in order to return to school. What he prepares as a lasting farewell present is an outdoor concert by her favorite band `Broken Social Scene´. Bruce runs around to get tickets only to realize the concert tickets are free. Bruce goes to the concert with his best friend Blake and Caroline, but their minds are cluttered with regrets of not wanting to go or sending each other. The lines full of feelings of regret exchanged in the midst of the big band’s beautiful concert do not stand out, owing to the powerful and straightforward musical score, including Lover’s Spit by ‘Broken Social Scene’. For those that find it too much in terms of culture to agree to the openness of the confusing conclusion, it may not be a bad idea to lose oneself in the wisdom of contemplation that the name of the band contains. What kind of love will we confront in the ‘broken social space’? The new relationship that transcends endemic melodrama makes us look back on ourselves being unable to break away from the constraints of obsessive relationships that are ‘dotted with the duties and restrictions of intimate love.’As the title suggests, this movie is refreshingly broken.
