Traditionally, the bamboo symbolizes unbending fidelity. It has also been a favorite subject for scholar-painters. The spirit of the bamboo has been reproduced and mentioned throughout the history of Asian painting. However, no painting or any other forms of art considered the bamboo tree a living entity that dances in the wind and converses secretly with bugs, thereby creating a community of life. In Jang Min-yong´s Breath, the camera breaks from the solid symbolism of bamboo and becomes a microscope, examining the expressions, breath, dances of bamboo as well as their insect friends´ hike and struggle for survival. Breath shows that the ecosystem that we live in is full of diverse lives and languages, and that they sing and struggle endlessly for survival. This beautiful work delivers the realization that human alphabets and speech are not the sole constituent of language. Taking the breath of bamboo and the footsteps of insects, Breath shows that bamboo, wind and light communicate and breath together, sharing the whole wide world.
