Review

Although World War Ⅱ ended in 1945, many Japanese soldiers were stranded in China. Unable to return to their homeland they were drafted into domestic battles. The Japanese chief ordered them to fight for the Nationalist Party, and kill the Communist soldiers. Because they, the army of the Emperor of Japan, seemed to believe that proving the superiority of the liberalcamp was the only way to clear their disgrace at losing the war. Striking from hiding places, the Japanese slaughtered numerous locals. Although the soldiers argued that they were obeying orders, the Japanese government claimed that the soldiers had volunteered to fight. The main character, Okumura, killed many young people in the war, but grows to believe that a country that does not take responsibility for its own deeds can no longer be his country. This film shows the promise of a brighter future through a sincere portrayal of humanity that repents and embraces opportunities for healing.
