Review

Sergei Paradjanov is a master of the 20th century Soviet film who resisted the Soviet government´s oppression more intensely than anyone for freedom and independence. In this regard, in 1961 shows a different aspect of his early works which is contrary to the director´s image. He made 8 films at Dovzenko Studio from 1954 to 1968 and was a mainstream film commissioned by the government which was faithful to the style of Socialist Realism. As for the content, the Second World War has just started when a young provincial woman wins a prize at an international vocal music contest and trusts the glory to her country. She declines an international recognition. But she decided to return to her home town to serve the community as a musician waiting for her enlisted lover and finally finds a peace. Despite such
a simple-hearted, passionate melodramatic plot, contains unique mise-en-scene and fantastic aesthetics of color that will shine brighter in his later works, as well as excellent folk music.
