The 18th Jeonju International Film Festival Unveils ‘Special Focus’, ‘Michael Winterbottom : The Filmmaker Across the Boundaries´

The 18th Jeonju International Film Festival(Jeonju IFF, Festival Director LEE Choong-jik) holds a special exhibition of Michael Winterbottom : ´Michael Winterbottom, The Filmmaker Across the Boundaries´. This exhibition is one of ´Special Focus´ programs, which introduce the world’s greatest directors to Korean audiences and present a conversation with masters.
´Michael Winterbottom, The Filmmaker Across the Boundaries’ is the first ’Special Focus´ program to be unveiled at the 18th Jeonju International Film Festival. It will be an opportunity to meet his wide range of works including fiction films, documentaries, music videos and television films, many of which have been previously introduced and screened in Korea.
Michael Winterbottom, who has been developed his own career through various themes and a variation of forms, is a cineaste who confronts reality beyond a storyteller, and a cineaste who have been dealt with the poverty of literature, music, and reality in terms of theme. Winterbottom himself will visit Jeonju and participate in ‘Master Class’ and Guest Visit(GV) during the festival.
In particular, the original version of 9songs (2004), which was previously released in Korea but was screened in cut version because of censorship, and 24 Hour Party People (2002), which is a music and documentary film, will be screened. Also screening in this exhibition are ´The Trip´ series including The Trip (2010) and The Trip to Italy (2014), which were produced for BBC; Some of his early fiction films including Jude (1996); Documentary films that are never been released in Korea such as The Shock Doctrine (2009) and The Emperor’s New Clothes (2015).
‘Master Class’, which will be held twice, is a program to help the audience understand the cinematic artistry of Michael Winterbottom, one of the most representative directors of contemporary cinema whose filmography consists of over 40 films. "This exhibition aims to focus on not only the director Winterbottom himself, but also the various points of views on the circumstances in Europe after the 90s,” LEE Sang-yong, one of the programmers of Jeonju IFF explained.
The special exhibition of Michael Winterbottom is organized in collaboration with the British Council to celebrate ´2017-18 Korea-UK Year´. The yet-to-come ´Special Focus´ programs of the Jeonju International Film Festival following ´Michael Winterbottom, The Filmmaker Across the Boundaries’ are expected to bring greater attention on ´masters´ of cinema. Fifteen of Winterbottom’s works will be presented at the 18th Jeonju International Film Festival from April 27th (Thu) to May 6th (Sat).
