Streamed live through the Naver V live online broadcast, the Jeonju International Film Festival (Jeonju IFF) held the official press conference on Wednesday, April 3rd in Jeonju to unveil this year’s official selections, programs, features, and changes. This year, the press conference was held by the Chairman of the Organizing Committee Kim Seung-soo (the mayor of Jeonju) and Jeonju IFF programmers. The directors and casts of “Jeonju Cinema Project (JCP) 2019” attended the press conference representing the selected projects ISADORA´S CHILDREN, Somewhere in Between, the Breathing of the Fire and Shades of the Heart. This year, a total of 262 films (202 features, 60 shorts) will be presented at the 20th Jeonju IFF.
The press conference began with the Chairman of the Organizing Committee presenting the past, present and future of the 20 years of the festival and emphasized the significance of protecting Jeonju IFF’s unique “independent” spirit.
The 20th Jeonju IFF official slogan, “Cinema, Liberated and Expressed” was also revealed. By adding a comma between “cinema” and “expression”, the Jeonju IFF’s official slogan emphasizes that the festival not only focuses on “cinematic expression” itself but also expand the various ways of expression through cinema.
The Italian director Claudio Giovannesi’s film Piranhas will open the 20th Jeonju IFF. Piranhas is a film about teenagers expanding their power by assisting adult drug dealers. Piranhas was invited to the International Competition of the Berlin International Film Festival 2019 and won the Best Screenplay award. The closing film will be Guy Nattiv’s Skin, a film based on true events telling a story about redemption as a young man turns his back on hatred and violence. The director was nominated for various film festivals and recently won the 2019 Academy Awards for Best Live Action Short.
A special program called Newtro Jeonju was launched to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Jeonju IFF. Newtro Jeonju invited 28 films of 21 filmmakers who have written history along with Jeonju IFF, including directors who have participated in the “Jeonju Digital Project/Jeonju Cinema Project” project. To celebrate the 100 years of Korean Cinema, special programs called the Another Upsring of Korean Cinema and Wild at Heart, was also launched under the section, 100 Years of Korean Cinema. Co-organized with the Korean Film Council, the 100 Years of Korean Cinema will introduce Korean films that should have received more spotlight by looking back at the Korean films and highlighting moments of originality in the history of Korean cinema.
Following last year’s special focus, the Disney Legendary, the Star Wars Archive: Never-ending chronology will also be presented along with the “Star Wars Day” event on Saturday, May 4th with music performances, parade events, and Lego exhibitions.
A non-theatrical installation program called Expanded Plus will be held for the first time. The Expanded Plus is a program derived from the Expanded Cinema section, a section of films observing a wide range of experimental styles and modes in cinema. 10 artists will simultaneously exhibit their works by theater screening, projection, and installation at the Factory of Contemporary Arts in Palbok along with the popular annual exhibition, 100 Films, 100 Posters. Programmer Jang Byungwon, stated that “For those who are curious about the future vision of Jeonju IFF, visit Palbok.”
Programmer Sung Moon revealed the lineup of the “Jeonju Cinema Fund”, a project development fund to discover and support Korean Independent filmmakers of novel and creative developing film projects, and the selections of “JCP: NEXT EDITION”, a pitching event to select an international project for “JCP” which received enthusiastic responses from all over the world including Asia, Latin America, North America and Europe with the twice the number of submissions than last year. Moreover, the “Middle Earth Camp”, a supporting hub for creators of various fields of culture art to strengthen the capacity of filmmakers, was newly introduced.
The four official selections of the “JCP 2019” were also presented with the attendance of the directors, actors, and actress of the selected projects. The “JCP” is a feature film production program which contributed of winning a number of awards at international film festivals and expanding the Korean independent film market. Director Damien Manivel, of ISADORA´S CHILDREN, who won the Best Picture Prize at the 18th Jeonju IFF could not attend the press conference but sent a message as, “JCP was a really big help of this film and I think its precious for an independent filmmaker like me to able to make films rapidly and in a very independent spirit.” Jeon Jeehee, an emerging filmmaker, Lee Donghwi, the remarkable actor and Lee Sanghee, a promising actress stepped up the stage to introduce the project Somewhere in Between. Filmmaker Ko Hee-young, a documentary director who won the 17th Jeonju IFF Korean Competition special mention and the CGV Arthouse distribution support prize with her film Breathing Underwater, revisited Jeonju with her film the Breathing of the Fire. Kim Jong-kwan, acknowledged for films like The Worst Woman and The Table, introduced his project Shades of the Heart with the renowned actor Yeon Woo-jin.
Over 7500 people watched the press conference online, which proves the attention and expectation toward the 20th Jeonju IFF. The 20th Jeonju IFF will be held from Tuesday, May 2nd to Saturday, May 11th for 10 days at 5 theaters and 22 screens in Jeonju on the Cinema Street and in the Factory of Contemporary Arts in Palbok.
