? In Korean Competition, Korean Competition for Shorts, and Korean Cinema, 54 Korean films confirmed their online screenings
? 42 international films from sections including World Cinema and Expanded Cinema are joining online screenings.
The 21st JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Director LEE Joondong) revealed its selection to be screamed online, from May 28 to June 6.
JEONJU IFF’s organizing committee previously announced that this year’s festival would be scaled down. As a way to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, they decided to hold exclusive screenings of the competition titles, stream selected titles online for general public, and have smaller-scale offline screening for an extended period, from May 28 to September 20. For public audience, selected titles will be streamed online through wavve (http://www.wavve.com), a South Korean mega OTT platform.
Among the titles invited to participate in the JEONJU IFF 2020, 96 titles?54 Korean and 42 international projects?were to be streamed online. 9 out of 11 titles submitted to Korean Competition section?Gull, Blessedness: Monsters and Specters, Please Don’t Save Me, Take Me Home, Mom’s Song, Daldongne 33 Up, Midsummer Madness, I Don´t Fire Myself, and Homeless?join the online streaming. Among the 25 titles submitted for Korean Competition for Shorts section, 24 titles including The Floor Below and Driving School will be streamed online. 12 features and 9 shorts invited to screen for the Korean Cinema section, which is aimed to reflect on the past, present, and the future of Korean independent and art movies through the works by established directors, are to be streamed for online audience as well.
42 international titles that join the online streaming include as follows. 2 titles invited to compete in the International Competition section, Window Boy Would Also Like to Have a Submarine by Alex PIPERNO and One in a Thousand by Clarisa NAVAS; 4 new titles by great directors (Masters); 19 titles (World Cinema) to reflect on the past, present, and the future of the independent and art films in the world, 3 titles for the diverse audience to enjoy (Cinema Fest); 11 titles to showcase experimental projects (Expanded Cinema); and 1 title selected from JEONJU Cinema Project 2019.
Wavve, initially launched as POOQ in 2012 and has provided service for the past eight years, is a South Koream mega OTT platform. As of today, it has more than 9 million subscribers and is accessible through different types of devices including computers, smartphones, smart TVs, and OTT set-top boxes, among others.
Festival Director LEE Joondong mentioned that, “JEONJU IFF made a decision to collaborate with wavve for the following two reasons. First, they wanted to provide the audience quality virtual festival experience that is highly similar to an off-line film festival. Thus, they ensured that audience can choose to pay admission for the titles that they want to watch.” He also said another priority was security. “One of the biggest concerns of the directors and filmmakers was security and copyright issues. As a way to address such concerns, JEONJU IFF chose a platform that provides high quality content security services.”
Wavve further explained, “We have implemented strong security policies based on multi-DRM. In case a copyright violation occurs, we have technologies to track down device and user logs. We will legally respond to any attempts to abuse copyright law.”
Online streaming of JEONJU IFF 2020 is serviced in South Korea. Those who would like to watch the titles can visit the wavve’s website and sign up to membership online. JEONJU IFF web banner will direct one to the list of titles for online streaming. Two payment options are available: pay per title and pay per section. Viewers can watch titles that belong to the following sections?Korean feature, international feature, and Korean shorts (package screening)?at a fee KRW 7,000. Each international short title cost KRW 2,000. Online streaming will be open for a limited period of time, from May 28 to June 6.
LEE Joondong, the festival director added. “We are in the process of developing online venues and contents to diversify the festival experience for the audience. Please also look forward to our podcasts, talks and chats online, among others. We would like to make sure that the information we provide through the online platforms are sufficient and enjoyable for audience. We also would like to make sure that everybody stays safe from the pandemic and enjoy the film festival.”
